Free Trend Following Trade Ideas For July 2019 (Part 5):

I hope you’re enjoying the dog days of summer. I had some tech updates happening last week so am happy to be back to our regular format here this week.

And personally,, I’ve been a little bit off the grid the last few days so I’m excited to catch up on the markets and show you some trend following ideas that are looking promising.

Now for today’s agenda, let’s start by recapping the big picture action. After all, by looking at the major market trends we can start to get a sense of which way the momentum might be blowing. And that can make a big difference when drilling down to individual stock charts

July 2019 Stock Market Wrap-Up:

As the month of July draws to a close, there isn’t much for stock market bulls to complain about. Because in addition to sunny skies, the market indexes are generally moving up as well.

For starters, take a look at the SPY daily chart below. I like the way prices closed the week at the highs:

With low volatility and a strong weekly finish, I’m cautiously optimistic SPY could keep slowly bumping higher.

And then when you zoom out to the weekly chart, you can see SPY has recovered last week’s pullback and is actually still holding the gap from the start of the month…

So barring an end of month reversal, I think the line of least resistance could be higher here as the other major indexes all look reasonably strong too.

Plus, with the market seemingly reacting well to the current slate of earnings announcements, the upside momentum might be able to keep running. And that’s precisely why I want to show you some specific stock charts that might be of interest…

Now just as a quick reminder, we are still working our way through earnings season. And even though many companies have already reported, I encourage you to double check earnings dates as this could have an impact on your trading plan.

With that out of the way, let’s dive into some individual ideas that are showing momentum, like Aspen Technology (AZPN). This one has moved quite a bit recently but since it’s shown the ability to trend in the past, I’m open-minded this could keep running.

As long as you manage risk with proper position sizing and an exit plan, I think these kind of ideas are worthwhile. For example…

Another idea that’s picking up steam again is Thomson Reuters Corp (TRI). This ticker has been screaming higher most of the year, and just this week has broken out after a multi-week consolidation…

With the strength this is showing, the long-term uptrend and talk of a possible merger, I’m keeping TRI on my radar this week.

Now if higher-priced stocks aren’t your cup of tea, there are a couple newer issues that are off to a promising start (and come with lower price tags). So first up…

I’m keen to see the Global X Cloud Computing ETF (CLOU) is pushing to new highs. These software stocks have been acting well all year and look poised to keep moving…

If CLOU follows through further in the coming days I might try hitching a ride on this wagon.

And along the same lines, Arvinas (ARVN) is a relatively new IPO that’s been bumping it’s way up and finished this most recent week at the highs…

One word of caution, this stock is a little more volatile. So I’d be keeping my position smaller and leave a relatively wide stop to avoid the chance of getting whipsawed too soon.

Now before we finish…

I also want to share my existing trend-following trading positions for US-listed stocks with you. So here they are in a FinViz watch list! Take a look if you’re still itching for more potential trade ideas.

They might be of interest because everything is laid out in charts so you can easily see what’s what.

Because actually, there have also been a lot of great trends this week so I’m quite bullish on many of my existing holdings.

And plus…

I hope seeing my current stock portfolio helps give you more context on how I’m seeing the current market, AND, where I’m placing my bets.
